Having a lot of friends -- real and virtual -- who, at this point, have written books, is a two-sided coin. On one hand, you feel that if they can do it, you can do it.
On the other, it makes fear of failure all that much more gripping and paralytic.
So I'm going to break my fear of book-writing by joining in NaNoWriMo -- and endeavor to write a very fun, but not neccessarily GOOD novel. By announcing in advance that it will be really crappy, it takes the pressure off.
I can always rewrite afterwards, if I decide to take it more seriously.
The truth is that, as a journalist, my next step should probably be a non-fiction book about something in Israel, not a novel. But I like the NaNoWriMo attitude and camaraderie, and with fiction, I won't get stuck obsessing about research and reporting and just write.
So I'm joining this really cool group of bloggers undertaking NanoWriMo. Wish me luck...and a little encouragement always helps!
