July 15, 2007Johnny Depp NightmaresSo I didn't think anything of it when I found my eight-year-old daughter yesterday watching the updated version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on television. That was a mistake. She ended up in our bedroom with nightmares twice during the night and ended up camped out on the floor. This afternoon I decided to talk about it with her in a sympathetic motherly way. So I sat her down and said I understood about not liking scary movies. "Honey, I didn't like being frightened either and I got nightmares, too, at your age. In fact, I still do, and that's why, unlike a lot of my friends, I avoid horror movies that are scary and bloody." She paused and looked at me like I was an idiot. "MOM, there was no blood in that movie. There was chocolate." Posted by allisonks at July 15, 2007 11:38 PM | TrackBackComments
The original was much, much better. I feel the same way about Doctor Doolittle. And I don't believe it is just nostalgicalism at work here. The just made better children's movies in the past. That said "Toy Story" is an exception to that. Also "Night at the Museum" Although they weren't remakes of course. These days I would be very cautious about having my kid see a remake opting instead for showing them the original. And again, I don't think I am doing it because that was the version I first saw. If they ever make a remake of "Mary Poppins" count me out! In general, can you think of many remakes that were as good as the original? Parent Trap, I guess and I was surprised how quickly they made it again after the Olsen Twins version. The Wizard of Oz I thought would be untouchable but "the Wiz" was very good. But beyond that I can't think of many remakes that deserve even the title of the original. Posted by: Scott at July 16, 2007 02:46 AMI'm surprised the Johnny Depp version of this film didn't give ME nightmares! The original was so much better. The way Johnny Depp played the main role made me think that he was trying to somehow emulate Michael Jackson, and it was very unsettling. Give me the original any day! Posted by: Liza at July 16, 2007 12:22 PMJohnny Depp's version was great except for the singing part. Now THAT will give me nightmares Posted by: jay at July 16, 2007 11:18 PMThe second "Freaky Friday" was good, too. Ah, Lindsay Lohan before she became a train wreck!
