January 27, 2005Buckle UpDavid hits on one of my pet peeves -- guess it's a cultural difference that none of us can deal with -- the cavalier attitude that many Israeli parents have toward carseats and seatbelts for their kids. I see it so often that I've gotten used to it -- parents picking their preschoolers up and watching them drive away with the kids bouncing around like jumping beans in the back -- and the front seats. Around 1981, a man that worked for me lost his 2 1/2 year old daughter. After dropping him at work his wife and daughter left to drive home. They were in a line of traffic at a 4 way stop, taking their turn moving a car length and stopping. When it was her turn to enter the intersection, she let her foot off the brake, but a pedestrian stepped off the curb causing her to stop again. She was only moving at 1 or 2 mph when she hit the brakes. Her little girl, standing in the front passenger seat, lost her balance, fell forward, crushed her windpipe on the dash and died. I just can't understand people wanting to take that risk. Posted by: oceanguy at January 28, 2005 03:12 PM |
